As the weather in Ontario finally improves, many people will be taking to the road by motorcycle.  Despite the increasing presence of motorcycles on our roads and highways, some drivers of cars and trucks do not recognize or appreciate the presence of motorcycles.   Many motorcycle accidents result when drivers of other vehicles simply fail to see the motorcycle.  This spring and summer, please look for motorcycles particularly when proceeding through intersections, or turning onto roads from parking lots and driveways.  

Because of their small size, motorcycles may appear to be farther away than they actually are.  Also, motorcycles can be difficult to see when in a car’s blind spots. Before changing lanes, take an extra moment to thoroughly check your blind spot before making a lane change. It also important to leave plenty of space between yourself and a motorcycle if your are following a motorcycle. 

With warmer weather arriving in Ontario many people are excited about taking to the open road on a motorcycle.  Riding motorcycles is an enjoyable activity, and lets all do our part to keep this a safe and enjoyable riding season.

According to a study by Brown University, riders age 50 and older are sustaining more serious injuries as a result of motorcycle crashes when compared to younger motorcycle riders.  This age group had the highest rate of fracture, head, neck, and internal organ injuries.  Also, motorcycle riders over the age of 50 years have the highest rate of hospitalization when seen in an emergency department.
